| Description: These pretty little flowers are not much used in magic or medicine, but they do wonders to a winterdepression, when they show their heads through the snow! The stigma of one particular species of Crocus, Crocus sativus, is used as a spice: saffron. Genuine saffron is expensive, so beware of substitutes! Never buy powdered saffron, it may be diluted or altogether false. Always buy it as entire stigmas. You can even grow Crocus sativus in your own garden; unlike other Crocus species it flowers in the autumn. Tea made of Crocus sativus is said to promote sweating and act as an emmenogogue (Grieve). |
