| Description: The latin name Aquilegia means eagle, and perhaps refers to the shape of the flower. "Columbine" comes from colombo, which means dove - the nodding flower looks like a ring of doves pecking corn from the ground. The herb is said to be a favourite among fairies, and thus belongs in every fairy-garden! It is a pretty flower, and has the ability to transform, at least the next the generation often has another color than the mother-plant. There are several garden varianties of columbine, and they readily hybridize, so you can end up with a true feast of colors and shapes. The wild Columbine, Aquilegia vulgaris, has purple, rose and white flowers; other species and varieties have red, yellow and even black color. The plant was used medicinally earlier, but not anymore. It contains small amounts of cyanide. |
